Sunday 24th June 2012 Toowoomba, Queensland

We've had two very pleasant weeks in Toowoomba and tomorrow we are going to spend some time in Brisbane before we go north up the Sunshine Coast.

Toowoomba is about 130 kms west of Brisbane and uniquely situated on the edge of the escarpment of the Great Dividing Range at 700 metres above sea level, so it is not as hot or humid as Brisbane. The city centre is very reminiscent of Salisbury (Rhodesia) in the late sixties. Same broad streets, same verandah-style pavements, and the same predominance of beautiful Jacaranda trees. There is a strong element of German and English influence which has resulted in 250 parks and delightfully leafy streets. There is a remarkable collection of trees everywhere you look.

Toowoomba (pop. 128000) is an agricultural centre and also Australia's largest inland city. The soil here is a dark reddish brown, which is said to be extremely fertile. We bought a nice japanese pumpkin on the side of the road for 50c, and a very large avocado for $1. The bananas sell here for 85c per kilo, and are as sweet as can be. Property is much cheaper here than in Perth, and the whole suburban area is very cycle-friendly. We've really enjoyed riding all around, taking in the views.

There are three specialist hospitals in Toowoomba, and we were told that very many South African medical specialists are practising here, and that they are very much appreciated by the locals.

Monday 4th June 2012 Buladelah to Glenn Innes by car

Glenn Innes is 1100m  a.s.l. , and has pretty cold winters and I'm told also has very pleasant summers. We visited Armidale which is a lovely University and School city with beautiful 19th century architecture. Both towns were established by early Scottish settlers who were very dilligent in their town planning and tree planting efforts. We've done quite a bit of cycling around town and in the surrounding rural area.

Sunday 3rd June 2012 Sydney to Buladelah by car

We spent a very pleasant week with Jacquie and Tony who live in Mosman. They have a lovely place overlooking the harbour which is only minutes from Balmoral beach. Balmoral has to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and they are fortunate enough to be able to go for a swim there almost every day.

We met up with Jim and Julie who were on their way to Denver, Colorado, and had a most memorable lunch with them at an Italian restaurant called Beppi's.

The Circular Quay area of Sydney was having a "light festival", which used very powerful laser equipment to project images on to the Opera House and other buildings. The images were animated and/or video cast. It was the best that I have ever seen. It made the Singapore Light Show look patheticly amateurish.

The Pacific Highway which goes north from Sydney to Brisbane is double lane freeway almost all the way - nice and easy.

27th May 2012 Moss Vale to Sydney by car

We explored Moss Vale and nearby Bowral which is the birthplace of Sir Don Bradman.

26th May 2012 Merimbula to Moss Vale by car

The massive climb back up to the top of the Great Dividing Range from Nowra to Moss Vale is really spectacular.

25th May 2012 Bairnsdale to Merimbula by car

Merimbula is a very nice little holiday town on the south east coast of New South Wales.
