Monday 3rd. June. Krems to Tulln. 51km.
Last night we met a group of nine cyclists from Romania at our hotel, who were riding from Passau to Vienna with a back up vehicle carrying their luggage and spares etc. They were very organised, with GPS and walkie-talkies, and they said that they were confident of finding a way to continue east towards Vienna. Then, this morning they were very glum, because they had spoken to the local constabulary who had advised them that all the roads (except the autobahn), would be closed, so they had cancelled their ride. We had no option but to find a way through, and we did. After all our travels over the last two years on bicycles, we have come to learn that, more often than not, it is better not to get advice from locals (especially those who are not cyclists).
It has been most enjoyable dealing with the challenge of the flood conditions. We've learned from the TV news that these floods are even worse than 2002, so we've been very fortunate to be able to follow the wild river. We were amazed when the TV showed footage of Passau in flood. We recognised one spot where I photographed Les standing in front of the Town Hall, which is now completely under water and part of the Danube. (See photo on 29th May.) Stayed at Hotel Roemerhof, Tulln - very nice.
Route: Krems - Brunnkirchen - Hollenburg - Traismauer - Oberbierbaum - Zwentendorf - Tulln.
