Pembroke to Carmarthen. 69km.

Still having bright dry sunny weather. Another very pleasant ride - there were lots of hills, but we seem to be getting used to them.

Tenby is the quintessential British seaside holiday town, with beaches, cliffs, lots of holiday guest houses, a castle and lots of places to eat. It would be the ideal place to film a Marple or Poirot mystery movie. It felt almost like we were in the mediterranean, especially as it was so sunny today.

Stayed at the Rose And Crown Hotel.

Route: Pembroke - St.Florence - Tenby - Amroth - St.Clears - Llangynog - Carmarthen.

Pembroke rest day.

We've had a fascinating tour of the Pembroke Castle, led by a retired history teacher named Gareth whose enthusiasm for the subject really made it most enjoyable.

The story of Henry VII's mother, Margaret Beaufort who was only 14 when she gave birth to him, was particularly interesting. Also intriguing was the life story of William Marshall, who was instrumental in the creation of the Magna Carta.

The building has a circular stairway leading down to an ancient limestone cavern, which dates back to the Mesolithic time and later the Iron Age.

Newgale to Pembroke. 40km.

A very easy and scenic ride to Pembroke today. We saw a house on the coast near Broad Haven which appeared to have been built into the cliff with a grass roof. (See picture)

We have been riding every day for seven days without a break, so we are going to take a day off tomorrow. Pembroke has a huge castle right in the town, where King Henry VII was born in 1457, so we are going to visit it tomorrow. Staying at The Old Kings Arms Hotel, which is excellent.

Route: Newgale - Nolton Haven - Druidston - Broad Haven - Portfield Gate - Johnston - Neyland - Pembroke.

Cardigan to Newgale. 83km.

We're in the middle of the Rugby World Cup, and last night the big game between England and Wales started at 8.00pm. I stepped out into the town centre to pick up an Indian take-away just before kick-off, and the previously bustling streets were completely deserted.

The game was exciting, and when Wales jumped into the lead in the dying moments, the whole town burst back into life with lots of harmonious welsh singing coming out of the pubs and hotels.

The ride today was longer (83kms), but not quite as hilly as before. Having said that, the first 5 kms were a steady relentless uphill climb. We went through the ancient St. Davids Bishops Palace, which is at the western-most corner of Wales. They were playing beautiful organ music in the Cathedral.

We are staying at Southwood Farm in a beautiful house owned by the National Trust and built in 1820.

Route: Cardigan - Nevern - Newport - Cilgwyn - Fishguard - Abercastle - Berea - St.Davids - Bryngwyn  Newgale.

Lampeter to Cardigan. 72km.

The weather gods are looking after us. We've been having lovely sunny days. Lampeter turned out to be a very charming university town, with lots of cheerful young people around.

It was a tough ride today with lots of hills and dales, and twists and turns. Thank goodness for the electric bikes! We also lost our way for a while in Llanbydder, which didn't help, but the lovely countryside compensated.

Stayed at Llety Teifi Guest House - very nice.

Route: Lampeter - Alltyblack - Llanfihangel Ar-Arth - Llandysul - Pentre-Cwyrt - Henllan - Llandyfrog - Cwym-Cou - Cenarth - Abercych - Cilgerran - Cardigan.

Aberystwyth to Lampeter. 52km.

A nice, easy and short ride to Lampeter today. The Ystwyth Trail is an old railway route, so the gradients are not too bad. Wales is very scenic. Stayed at the Black Lion Hotel which was built in 1700 - very nice. We arrived at 2.00pm, so I used the time to service the bikes.

Route: Aberystwyth - Tynygraig - Tregaron - Lampeter.
