We cycled 19 kms from Brockenhurst to Hythe Ferry Point following Cycle Route 2. The voice on Google Maps (whom we've named "The Auntie"), occasionally tries to send us on a slightly different way, but we stuck to the well-signposted Route 2. Whenever we ignored her directions, she quickly re-routed the directions to fit in with Route 2. It's really helpful that Google Maps finds a bicycle friendly path route.
From Hythe we caught a short ferry to Southampton port, and then caught the 'Red Funnel Jet Ferry' to West Cowes on the Isle Of Wight.
The Isle Of Wight is much bigger than I had imagined, and has a quieter, holiday type atmosphere about it.
After we landed at Cowes we cycled 9 kms to Premier Inn Newport along a mostly traffic free path with lovely views that a motorist on the island would not see.
Route : Brockenhurst - Beaulieu Road Station - Dibden - Hythe - Southampton Port - West Cowes - Red Squirrel Trail (along the River Medina) - Newport.
