Monday, 18th September 2023. Dorchester to Bridport return. 46 kms.

This is surprising - we woke up this morning to the BBC News telling us that the Southwest of England was inundated with heavy rain yesterday. They showed footage of flooded roads and houses.

Well, we're in Dorchester in the Southwest, and we just had a little drizzle in the morning, and no problem on our ride.

Today we decided to cycle to Bridport, which is west of Dorchester on the way to Devon, and then back through the Bride River Valley. The first 10 kms were a steady uphill climb to the Hardy Memorial. When I saw it on the map, I presumed that it was a memorial to the author Thomas Hardy, but when we got there it turned out to be dedicated to Captain Sir Thomas Hardy, who was the Captain of the HMS Victory at the battle of Trafalgar. Another coincidental connection to Lord Nelson. Whenever we cycle tour, we seem to bump into something connected to him.

We did 46 kms today, and there was a strong westerly headwind all the way to Bridport, so it was a delight when we turned around for the return with a welcome tailwind. The scenery in the back roads was really great.

Route: Dorchester - Maiden Castle - Hardy Monument - Little Bredy - Litton Cheney - Shipton Gorge - Uploders - Bradpole - Bridport.
