2nd June Fairlie to Lake Tekapo 45km

Really tough climb up Burkes Pass. Gained 470m above sea level in 1 day.  At top of Burkes Pass we could see snow capped mountains again.  Breathtaking.  Lake Tekapo a lovely town.  We climbed Mt John, taking us even higher to the observatory.  Freezing cold - part of climb frost covered.  Stunning views at the top made it all worth while.  Rest stop of 3 days in Lake Tekapo.  Perfect weather and really nice accommodation with great views of the lake.
Decided to take bus rather than cycle to Mt Cook because of chance of being snowed in.  Mt Cook absolutely awe inspiring.  Very cold 6 degrees even though the sun was shining.  Took a tour of the hotel (the most expensive in NZ to build) and also the Sir Edmund Hillary museum.
