Thursday 2nd. May. Montceau-les-Mines to Chalon-sur-Saone. 66km.

This was the best ride so far, with almost perfect weather and beautiful, ever-changing scenery. Unfortunately, the photos don't really show how good it was. We met three Aussies (about our vintage), from Brisbane, who had flown in to Basel and then were on an 18 day cycling trip through France. Then we met a young German girl from Berlin, who was doing a loop from Berlin to Paris via the Loire and back to Berlin via the Rhine. We also met a Frenchman from Le Mans, who was cycling from St.Nazaire to Vienna. He was carrying no luggage at all and explained that his wife was driving ahead of him in a mobile home and meeting him at his daily destination. There were lots of canal barges on the move today, as well. Stayed at the Hotel des Jacobines.

Route: Montceau-les-Mines - Blanzy - Ecuissses - St.Leger-sur-Dheune - Chagny - Chalon-sur-Saone.
