Wednesday 8th. May. Besancon to Pont-les-Moulins. 43km.
When we went to pick up my bike, they hadn't even touched it. They said that the wheel rim itself was cracked and not repairable. This was at 4 o'clock on Tuesday with Wednesday and Thursday being public holidays! After much discussion, the mechanic found a 29 inch mountain bike wheel (rare), which he thought he might be able to fit to my bike. Well, he was successful much to our relief.
As we were leaving Besancon we saw that the municipal lawns were being mowed the old-fashioned way - by horse-drawn mowers. The trip today was first through the tunnel under the Citadel which was created to accommodate the canal, and then up through the Doubs Valley, where Le Doubs river snakes its way through corridors of high cliffs and ridges. It really is just beautiful, and the cycle path is in perfect condition. We met a Swiss family, who had caught the train from Berne to Besancon, and were taking a few days to cycle back to Basel. Lots of cyclists and rollerblade skaters on the track today. Stayed at Auberge-des-Moulins.
Route: Besancon - Deluz - Baume-les-Dames - Pont-les-Moulins.
