We arrived at Schiphol Airport after a 30 hour journey via Dubai. Neither of us enjoy flying long distance, so we were very pleased to get off the plane.
Our bikes survived the trip and we found a corner of the airport to re-assemble them with no problem. We cycled out of Schiphol and luckily found the cycle path to Amsterdam quite easily. We went astray a few times, but then met a couple of cyclists who were riding to the city centre who told us to just follow them.
We were amazed at the endless flow of cyclists going in all directions. Amsterdam has a population of 650 000, and I believe there are even more bicycles!
We rode through Vondel Park which is really nice.
Amsterdam gives a real mix of impressions. On the one hand it is beautiful and charming and historic, but on the other hand it is very crowded, very littered and appears to be in a state of some disrepair and some decay. The canals are pretty, but polluted. The old buildings are fascinating in their historic relevance, but seem to be all in need of urgent maintenance. I suppose they are registered as heritage protected , so cannot be restored.
The food and particularly the coffee is excellent here.
