Wednesday 7th September 2011 Ospel to Roosteren 55 km
Ospel reminded us of the old Free State towns of long ago - very conservative and proper. The church is the biggest building in town and the most active building in town.
There are lots of white swans in the waterways of Holland. They are quite common here. As we riding along today, I saw what looked like three pelicans flying straight towards me, and they turned out to be swans. They flew straight over our heads - quite a sight.
As we entered the little hamlet of Kessenich, we suddenly realised that we were in Belgium. The road signs and cycle checkpoint signs were a different colour and style. The route to Maastricht has crossed over the border, I suppose because it is more convenient.
We went throught Maaseik in Belgium, the birthplace of the famous artists the Van Eyck brothers. We will spend most of the ride tomorrow on Belgian soil. The Belgian architecture and general landscaping is even more impressive than the Dutch. They seem to have taken a lot of care to create an artistic picture in their towns appearance.
We crossed back into Holland and booked into the Hotel Terborch in Roosteren. Delightful!
We have done a total of 688 km since we landed at Schiphol.
