Tuesday 13th September 2011 Herselt to Antwerp 61 km

The great thing about following the routes is that the scenery changes constantly as we glide silently through each area.  The winds were quite strong again today.  We've seen a few trees recently blown over or snapped in half, so I think the winds have been pretty bad overnight.

We arrived at the outskirts of Antwerp and asked a passing cyclist for directions.  He was busy helping us, when another cyclist came up and shouted at our helper for blocking the path.  Our helper voiciferously rejected his accusations, whereupon the newcomer threatened (in french) to punch or kick him.  There were a few kickbox and shadow boxing antics by the newcomer until I intervened, with Les screeching loudly in the background,  and finally the fellow departed.  By this time we had managed to create a traffic jam and had a large contingent of onlookers.

We then set off again and at the next intersection a young Brazilian on a bike who must have witnessed the event offered to guide us into the city centre.  He was so helpful, giving us a running commentary on Antwerp's attractions.  Poor Les had to ride flat out to keep up, as he rode like the wind with little regard to minor things like other cyclists, pedestrians or traffic lights.

Despite our baptism of fire, Antwerp seems to be a most delightful city.
