Sunday 2nd October 2011 Fakenham to Hunstanton 47 km
Another nice hot day. Went past Holkham Hall which is an 18th century estate built by Lord Leicester. At first I thought it must be Sandringham, because it was so grand and so comprehensively first class in every way. Afterwards I looked it up in Wikipedia and it has quite a history. Amazingly, it is still owned by the current Lord Leicester who allows visitors by appointment. It covers 2500 acres.
We then came across Burnham Thorpe which was the home of Horatio Nelson. It's quite a coincidence that we had cycled through Waterloo in Belgium where I presume Nelson defeated Napoleon, and then happened upon Nelsons home in England. We had also spent a week in Nelson (named after Horatio), in NZ Where there is a statue of him,and main street is Trafalgar Street.
We also came across a field of poppies which was very pretty. Hunstanton is a very nice seaside resort town. The big bay area that lies to the west of Norfolk is called The Wash, and they have a very big amphibious truck/boat that drives down the beach and into the sea, called The Wash Monster used as a tourist attraction.
